A few weeks ago I posted a meditation considering the Washington Times 'Scoop' or 'Plant' on Bloomberg's intended game plan for Presidency.
One of the most interesting elements of the Bloomberg story was a quote about McCain's campaign. "A smoking bi-plane spiralling down."
McCain the Smoking BiPlane, Bloomberg the Gun.
I have a huge respect for Mike Bloomberg. I have done work for Bloomberg Information Networks. And while I live in DC, I am from NYC where most of my family still live. Mike has earned the respect of members of my family ranging from Army Grunts to Union FireFighters to Hourly Workers to Salary Workers.
I was aware when I read the article Bloomberg was considering a run. I have friends close to him.
I also had heard DC chatter that McCain's campaign was not meeting expectations. But the clarity and precision of the Bloomberg insiders passing on "McCain is Dead" memes is generally a no-no in campaigning.
Bloomberg is funny that way. He calls it like he sees it.
And guess what. McCain really is in that bad a shape.
So over 4th I ran into an old Bloomberg collegue at a party. We talked politics. We talked about the coordinated leaks keeping Bloomberg at the edge of things. My collegue then gave me the treat of treats for the 4th: "Romney's Next."
Nothing will make me happier than seeing that opportunistic sleaze deal with the silent, relentless lethatlity of Bloomberg.
On a wider note there is a very widely placed rumour (which I have been unable to confirm) that Bloomberg is buying $100m+ in network airtime covering the two months leading to the General Election in 2008.
If he does run, no one will get airtime. If he doesn't run, no one will get airtime unless they buy it from him.
Having Billions Liquid. Priceless.
