Robinson Jeffers entered University of Pittsburg at age 15 already having read the classics and having learned Greek, Latin, French, Hebrew and "a smattering of Sanskrit". He was raised by a minister who believed in God, Knowledge and Goodness.
His education continued at 18 in the trenches of the Somme, where he was the only member of his platoon to return alive. Here he learned God, Knowledge and Goodness are not useful in the end.
He resolved to "no god but my own life' to build a stone tower and live in it if he returned. He did.
Often referenced as the most controversial American poet of the 20th century his work contemplates, his work pierces, with unblinking eyes, the savage-intelligent-futility-stupidity of man, knowledge, technology and God.
I call attention to this poem in light of experiences of War, and Punctuation. Fully Reprinted below.
